The flight of the Super Eagles. The Nigerian National Football team

African teams in the World Cup have always promised much but rarely delivered. Despite providing some of the leading players for major sides in the UK, French and German Leagues the African Nations have yet to notch up a true success in the World Cup. Three teams have established themselves namely the Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Nigeria. To date the Super Eagles of Nigeria are the only ones to have done consistently well plus they have one and International Tournament with a Gold Medal at the 1996 Olympics (beating Brazil on the way) and 3 time winners of the Africa Cup of Nations. There highest FIFA ranking saw them up to 5th in 1994. With their cool green kit the Super Eagles make quite an impression as you could do if you need Cheap Football Kits because you could use one of the many online providers and football kits from kitking are a great place to start.

The flight of the Super Eagles. The Nigerian National Football team

The Nigeria National team began its full existence on the World stage with a series of friendly matches in England after the Second World War. Nigeria was still a part of the British Empire back then and they were welcomed by several lower league teams. This proved to be successes for the team and they then went on to win the 2nd All Africa Games and two 3rd Place finishes in the first years of the Africa Cup of Nations. Victories came in 1980 and 1994 which also saw their first appearance at a World cup in 1994. They amazed the world coming top out of a group of established teams such as Argentina, Bulgaria and Greece in the first round. They were thought of as being the weakest team in the group. They were ahead in the second round against Italy only for the brilliant Roberto Baggio to score in the last few minutes and then again in Extra time.

In-between the World Cup of 1998 and 94 they won the 1996 Gold Medal at the Olympics in Atlanta. They came to France 98 with a high hopes and were widely tipped to go all the way and be the first African Nation to at least reach the Final if not win it (proving Football Legend Pele’s prediction that an African Nation would win it before the end of the Century true).  They started well beating Spain 3-2, coming from behind twice. They then beat Bulgaria but lsot to Paraguay. Sadly, despite coming through the group stage they were not able to advance to the Quarters following a loss to Denmark.
